Le Méridien Budapest is 10 years Old

First a little bit of history...

1918
: Birth of protected monument Adria Palace which housed the Adria Insurance Company + Luxurious shops and studio + 14 high standard apartments. The façade was richly ornamented by ten marble statues symbolizing the different insurance branches.

1950: Budapest Police Headquarter. Budapest Citizens remember well those years when several political dissidents were kept in the jails of the Budapest police. According to the archives, these jails were located in the basement of the hotel, level of the actual ballroom. The original name of the square, Erzsébet, named in 1857 after Queen Elisabeth (Sissi) was first changed to Staline, then to Engels, two leaders of the communist era.

2000: Le Méridien Budapest. It was the very first hotel in Budapest to receive the prestigious Five Star Diamond Award from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences. Among many others, the hotel is proud to have received TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice Award. During the 10 past years, the hotel hosted lots of world famous people, singers, actors, politicians, presidents and sportsmen. The staff will always remember opera singer Placido Domingo's visits or those exciting (challenging) days when the President of the United States took over the hotel for his state visit in 2006.

Some interesting numbers...

10 years is long enough to make interesting statistics: the hotel accommodated around 1 000 000 guests coming from all over the world, the pastry used 20 tons of flour to cook its fine cakes so well known in the city and guests in Le Bourbon restaurant consumed around 400 000 pieces of croissants for breakfast during the past 10 years.

A few words from the General Manager...

If I had to emphasize three key landmarks for the hotel during my tenure, says Adrian Gray, general manager of Le Méridien Budapest, they would be the following, 1) Bringing the French touch to Budapest through food, cheese & wine and culture.2) The personalised and tailor made service offered to our guests, and finally 3) The engagement of the hotel in various charity activities focused on sick and underprivileged children. The highlight being the opportunity to draw in our Starwood colleagues who took part in a conference here in Budapest and part of their program included a visit and set of activities to support the Pediatric hospital in Tűzoltó utca, part of the Semmelweis University. The day included meeting the children, completing drawings and paintings for the walls and chairs of the hospital, and recultivating the children's garden and playground in 42degrees heat. Whilst here they realised that the hospital was missing over 24 thousand Euros to complete the new wards for the immunology section of the hospital and they all took this with them as their challenge when they returned to their respective hotels. Three months later a cheque was presented to the hospital for the 24 thousand Euros by Le Meridien Budapest and Starwood Hotels and Resorts, allowing the hospital to complete the works. Each hotel had created a set of activities designed to raise the required funds. This was the highlight of the conference.
